New HOPE Projects in Botswana

Humana People to People in Botswana has started HOPE projects to fight HIV/AIDS and support people infected and affected by the HIVAIDS epidemic in Botswana.

The HOPE projects are sustaining the fight against HIV/AIDS in Botswana following the conclusion of the Total Community Mobilisation Programme. 

The Total Community Mobilisation Programme was a 3-years HIV/AIDS educational programme in Botswana. It was a one-on-one-educational campaign promoting change in the sexual behaviours in people, to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, and taking care of infected and affected people.

There are 4 HOPE projects working in Mabutsane, Lobaste, Gaborone and Palapye. The HOPE projects are educating commercial sex workers, truck divers and the youth in safe sexual behaviours. So far the HOPE projects have reached 47 369 people in 14 villages in Serowe and Palapye, on one-on-one HIV/AIDS educational campaigns. The people are mobilised from nightclubs, bars and shebeens and educated on safe sex life styles, correct use of condoms and HIV/AIDS counselling and testing.

The Hope Field Officers in Serowe and Palapye villages mobilized 5508 people for HIV testing and are working in collaboration with clinics, supporting 783 patients on Antiretroviral drugs.

3 support groups have been formed in Ratholo, Maoga and Newtown. The support groups provide, spiritual, psychological and health support for people who have came forward are declaring their HIV positive status to the people in the community.

Humana People to People in Botswana is member of the Federation for Associations connected to the International Humana People to People Movement, involved in international cooperation and development in Europe, Africa, Asia, and India.
